Problems with the Lathem 2100HD

Great multi-generational American companies change.
Great companies such as Lathem Time Clock used to employ 200+ Americans.
Lathem no longer builds clocks from scratch in U.S.A.  Others still do.

The Lathem 2100HD has a thermal printer.  Not an ink ribbon printer, no motor, no gears.
They are not repairable, you throw the clock away.
It is sensitive to heat and cold.  The cards erase if they get hot, or stored for long periods of time.
The custom time cards (12 cents per card per week) are unique to this machine.
Normal paper cards cost about 2 cents per employee per week.

From the Lathem owners manual:

Caution Avoid placing the 2100HD in environments that are:
• humid • dusty • exposed to direct sunlight
• subject to frequent or continuous vibrations
• affected by chemicals or ozone • colder than 25°F and/or warmer than 113°F

These clocks are not affected by heat, humidity, dust, sunlight, or vibration, and they cost less, and they are made in U.S.A. (not China):
